Lets prepare for marriage

Talk about what kind of home you'd like and where, and the division of chores. Include conversations on how leisure time is spent and how you like to vacation. Discuss any health concerns you have about yourself or your future spouse.

Discuss financials--whether you'll have joint or separate bank accounts, your combined salaries, investments, preparing a budget and who will handle the bills. If you have charities important to you, discuss what you'd like to continue to donate to and how much.

Consider your partner's and your feelings about work, long hours, bringing work home, your retirement goals, how you would handle a job transfer and your individual level of contentment with your current jobs. Thinking through some of these issues as you prepare for marriage can make for a much easier decision should they become a reality.

Tackle the tough subject of sex. The depth of this discussion depends on the couple and their current level of intimacy with one another. Create an atmosphere where sex can be discussed from the start as you prepare for marriage.

  • Step 3

Consider your partner's and your feelings about work, long hours, bringing work home, your retirement goals, how you would handle a job transfer and your individual level of contentment with your current jobs. • Step 4

Tackle the tough subject of sex. The depth of this discussion depends on the couple and their current level of intimacy with one another. Create an atmosphere where sex can be discussed from the start as you prepare for marriage.

  • Step 5

Weigh carefully your desires to have (or not have) children, and whether one of you plans to stay home when the children are small. Also consider your relationship with extended family and where you'll spend holidays.

  • Step 6

Determine the level of socializing each of you enjoy with friends. Agree to consult each other before committing to an invitation, especially if one of you has a tendency to be more social.

  • Step 7

Examine your thoughts on religion, particularly if you're of different faiths. Discuss which religion the children will be raised to follow, as religion frequently becomes more important after you have them. Talking this through as a preparation for marriage can also help you to get to know your future spouse better.
